Item Description

A swarm of space bugs has its eyes on your orchard, and only one quick-handed gunner stands between them and the harvest. Spider Fighter is Activision's colorful take on the fixed shooter, a reworking of the arcade game Stratovox designed by Larry Miller, the programmer behind Enduro. It looks like a Space Invaders-style game at first glance, but the twist changes everything: the enemies care as much about your food as they do about you, so the game is about defense rather than simple attrition.

Three pieces of fruit sit in the upper right corner of the screen, and the fruit changes as you advance, from grapes to strawberries, oranges and bananas. Master Nests drift in, spawning bugs that dive and fire at your blaster, and the nests themselves will swoop down, grab a piece of fruit and try to drag it off the left side of the screen. Shoot a nest in time and it drops its prize, which sets up some of the game's best moments: a frantic scramble across the screen to save the last bunch of grapes while dodging a hail of fire. Lose all your fruit, or all your lives, and the game is over, and the enemies get faster the further you go.

It is fast and frantic in the classic Activision way, with crisp controls, punchy sound and a difficulty that ramps quickly. Like many of the company's cartridges it came with a high-score challenge at release, offering an Activision patch to players who sent in a photo of 40,000 points or more. Spider Fighter has always lived a little in the shadow of Megamania, Activision's better-known shooter from the same period, which makes it a fun discovery for 2600 players who think they have already seen the system's best shooters.

About the game

Spider Fighter is a Space Invaders style game. It is your mission to prevent space spiders from stealing your food reserves which are located on the top right of the screen. The spiders hatch from cocoons which are dropped from the top left of the screen. Since the spiders are able to attack you, your reactions are tested quite soon as you attempt to dodge the enemies and their bullets while trying to shoot them down. If you you lose all your food reserves or your lifes, it's game over. The enemy moves faster the more progress you make in the game.
