Item Description
Secret Lair's Artist Series hands a small run of cards to a single illustrator and lets that one style define the drop. Thomas M. Baxa, a painter known for unsettling, surreal creatures, is a natural match for a Phyrexian Horror, and his Spellskite turns a sideboard utility card into a piece with real presence on the table.
The card earns its slot anywhere. For two generic mana you get a 0/4 artifact creature with one maddening ability: pay {U/P}, either a blue mana or 2 life, and change a target of a spell or ability to Spellskite. Removal aimed at your commander, an Aura an opponent casts on their own creature, a burn spell headed for your face: all of it can be pulled onto the Skite whenever it is a legal target. With life as an alternative payment it works in decks of every color, and four toughness lets it absorb a surprising amount of punishment.
This is the Secret Lair Drop printing from the Thomas Baxa Artist Series, collector number 277, illustrated by Thomas M. Baxa, offered here in foil. Commander players protecting one big threat get cheap insurance, and the foil Artist Series treatment makes that insurance worth showing off.
