Magic: The Gathering single: Spellskite, from Modern Masters 2015 Edition. Our grade: Near Mint. Pictured: this printing of the card. Every card ships triple-sleeved — a soft sleeve, a deck sleeve and a rigid top loader.
Item Description
Your opponent finally draws the removal spell for your best creature, points it across the table, and Spellskite steps into its path. That is the whole joy of this two-mana 0/4 Phyrexian Horror: pay {U/P}, which means a single blue mana or simply 2 life, and change a target of a spell or ability to Spellskite instead. Because the cost can be paid in life, it fits decks of any color, and four toughness means a redirected Lightning Bolt leaves it standing.
In Commander that redirect becomes real insurance for a Voltron commander loaded with Auras and Equipment, exactly the creature a table most wants gone. It also punishes opponents who target their own creatures with Auras, pump spells or combo pieces, since you can pull those effects onto Spellskite whenever it is a legal target. The card debuted in New Phyrexia and earned a lasting reputation in Modern as a lightning rod for targeted removal and creature combos.
This is the Modern Masters 2015 printing, collector number 230, illustrated by Chippy, offered in non-foil. Malcator's flavor text sums up the appeal neatly: “Let's show Vorinclex that progress doesn't always need teeth or claws.”
