Item Condition

Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. The photos are of this exact copy — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

An opossum knight with a sword in one paw and a rocket pack on his back is the kind of pitch only Konami in its 16-bit prime could make work, and Sparkster proves the original Rocket Knight Adventures was no fluke. Developed and published by Konami for the Genesis in 1994, this sequel picks up after Sparkster toppled the pig empire of the first game. Now the reptilian Gedol Empire has its eye on the kingdom of Zebulos, and King Gedol sends Sparkster's rival, Axel Gear, to kidnap Princess Cherry and lure our hero into a trap.

The rocket pack is the star. It now charges on its own and builds through two levels: the first launches Sparkster across the screen in any of eight directions as a rocket attack, while a full charge unleashes a longer-range screw attack that can also drive into screws built into the stages. The sword is strictly melee this time, which keeps the focus on movement, and with five hearts of health every reckless boost counts. Gems feed a slot machine that pays out food, power-ups and extra lives, or occasionally bombs, so every spin carries a little risk.

The set pieces are where the sequel shows off. Sparkster's SparkRobo mech squares off against Axel Gear's machine in punch-and-block duels, and seven hidden swords, the Keys to the Seal, wait to be found across the adventure. Collect them all and Sparkster becomes Gold Sparkster, hitting harder and recharging faster, and only then can you reach the true ending. The music comes from Akira Yamaoka and Michiru Yamane, who would go on to shape the sound of Silent Hill and Castlevania, and their score gives the game a bright, punchy energy.

Reviewers liked it, if a notch less than the original, with GamePro calling it a good progression while flagging slowdown in later stages. Played today, it is the natural next step after Rocket Knight Adventures and the more ambitious of Sparkster's two Genesis outings, with a Gold Sparkster hunt that gives completionists a reason to comb every stage twice.
