Item Description

Somewhere in South Park, a group of fourth-graders is playing make-believe in a backyard, and the fate of the whole town hinges on a stick. The Stick of Truth looks and sounds exactly like an episode of the show because Trey Parker and Matt Stone wrote it and worked closely on it, and Obsidian Entertainment, the RPG veterans behind Fallout: New Vegas, gave that comedy the bones of a real role-playing game.

You play the New Kid, freshly moved to town and quickly drafted into Cartman's Kingdom of Kupa Keep, where the Grand Wizard and his followers are locked in an escalating feud with Kyle's elves. Choose a class, Fighter, Mage, Thief or Jew, and the town opens up: a fully explorable South Park crammed with locations, characters and in-jokes from across the show's history, plus a Facebook-style friend system that rewards you for winning over the residents.

Combat is turn-based but never passive. Timed button presses power up your attacks and blunt incoming hits, in the spirit of Paper Mario, and party members like Butters, Stan, Kyle and Princess Kenny bring their own special moves. Your magic is fart-powered, summons call in some of the show's most notorious characters for devastating assists, and strap-ons and patches let you customize weapons and armor with extra effects. Side quests send you all over town, and the jokes keep escalating to places that only South Park would dare go.

The game took a winding road to release. It began life at THQ, and after that publisher's bankruptcy Ubisoft acquired it and brought it out in 2014. It was worth the wait: critics praised how faithfully it captured the show's humor in playable form, and its success led directly to The Fractured But Whole. This is South Park at full strength, crude and smart in equal measure, and the closest thing to starring in your own episode.
