Item Description

Most action games reward you with new gear. Soul Sacrifice asks what you are willing to give up. Conceived by Keiji Inafune, the co-creator of Mega Man, and developed by Marvelous AQL with Sony's Japan Studio, it is a dark fantasy built entirely around the idea of sacrifice, and few games on the PlayStation Vita feel as strange, grim or original.

You wake as a prisoner of Magusar, a sorcerer who keeps himself immortal by consuming human lives, waiting your turn to be devoured. Your only ally is Librom, a talking book with a sardonic streak whose pages record past battles against the creatures of this world. By living through those Phantom Quests you gain the strength to face Magusar. Each story builds to an archfiend, a monster that was once a person consumed by their own desires, and reading their backstories turns every boss fight into something closer to a dark fairy tale.

The combat system is where the theme bites. Spells come from offerings, which break when their charges run out and must be restored with Lacrima. When an enemy falls you choose to save it and recover a little health or sacrifice it to recharge your magic, and those choices steer how your sorcerer grows. When things turn desperate, Black Rites let you sacrifice part of your own body for a devastating attack: give up your skin and your defense is halved, give up your eyes and your vision suffers until you restore them. Even a fallen ally presents a choice, revived at the cost of half your health or sacrificed to unleash a map-wide spell.

The game was built for four-player co-op, both locally and online at launch, and Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger) and Wataru Hokoyama gave it a sweeping, mournful score. Its multiple endings turn on what you decide to do with Magusar once he is beaten. This is the original 2013 release that preceded the expanded Soul Sacrifice Delta, the first form of a cult favorite that Vita players still point to when they talk about what made the handheld special.

About the game

Soul Sacrifice is a brutal combat experience where every decision made will have consequential results. The main protagonist of Soul Sacrifice is one of the innocent bystanders that has been enslaved by a powerful and cruel sorcerer known as Magusar, who absorbs human sacrifices to remain immortal. Just before the protagonist is going to be sacrificed, a talking book appears before them. The book, named Librom, is a collection of stories that describe past fights between monsters and the powerful sorcerer. The player character is able to enter the book's world and experience the fights in events known as Phantom Quests, thereby gaining the experience and power needed to defeat Magusar. The game has two endings depending on whether the player saves or sacrifices Magusar after his defeat. There is also a third ending that occurs if the player defeats Magusar before completing all of the main stories in Librom.
