Item Description

Save them, or sacrifice them. Every major fight in Soul Sacrifice ends with that choice, and the game never lets you forget what it costs. You begin as a nameless prisoner of Magusar, an immortal sorcerer who keeps himself alive by consuming human sacrifices, until a talking book named Librom appears in your cell. Librom holds the journals of a sorcerer from the past, and by reading them you live out his battles in Phantom Quests, gaining the power you will need to face Magusar yourself. The concept came from Keiji Inafune, the co-creator of Mega Man, with development by Marvelous AQL and Sony's Japan Studio.

Magic in this world is never free. Spells come from offerings, items that run out of charges and break, and sacrificing the monsters you defeat recharges them while saving them restores a little health instead. When things get desperate, black rites let you sacrifice part of your own body, your skin, your bones, an eye, for a devastating spell, but the damage stays with you until you spend Lacrima to undo it. The monsters themselves were once people consumed by their own desires, and the stories behind them, told through Librom's pages, give each hunt a grim, tragic weight.

The design echoes the Vita's monster-hunting games, with mission-based boss fights and up to four sorcerers fighting together in co-op, and the save-or-sacrifice mechanic carries into multiplayer, where sacrificing a fallen ally unleashes a map-wide spell at the cost of their participation. The score by Yasunori Mitsuda, of Chrono Trigger and Xenogears fame, and Wataru Hokoyama gives the dark fantasy a sweeping, melancholy sound.

Critics praised its addictive combat and called out repetitive missions, but the game was a breakout hit in Japan and later received an expanded edition, Soul Sacrifice Delta. As a Vita exclusive with a bleak, original world and a branching ending that hinges on how you treat Magusar, it is one of the system's most distinctive original games, and a strong pick for players who like their fantasy dark and their choices uncomfortable.

About the game

Soul Sacrifice is a brutal combat experience where every decision made will have consequential results. The main protagonist of Soul Sacrifice is one of the innocent bystanders that has been enslaved by a powerful and cruel sorcerer known as Magusar, who absorbs human sacrifices to remain immortal. Just before the protagonist is going to be sacrificed, a talking book appears before them. The book, named Librom, is a collection of stories that describe past fights between monsters and the powerful sorcerer. The player character is able to enter the book's world and experience the fights in events known as Phantom Quests, thereby gaining the experience and power needed to defeat Magusar. The game has two endings depending on whether the player saves or sacrifices Magusar after his defeat. There is also a third ending that occurs if the player defeats Magusar before completing all of the main stories in Librom.
