Shadow the Hedgehog has spent more than two decades as Sonic's most popular rival, and Sonic X Shadow Generations finally gives him a campaign that treats him like a headliner. Black Doom, the alien warlord from Shadow's 2005 solo game, is back, and Shadow meets him with a new set of Doom Powers layered on top of his signature Chaos Control, which freezes time so he can blitz through enemies and hazards. Abilities like Doom Spear, Doom Surf and Doom Wing let him strike from range, ride across water and take to the air, and unlocking them keeps changing how the stages play.

His levels revisit the places that defined him: Space Colony ARK, Rail Canyon, Kingdom Valley, Radical Highway and Sunset Heights, plus Chaos Island from Sonic Frontiers, rebuilt with the boost-driven pace of the Generations formula and 2D sections woven between the 3D runs. Between stages, an expansive hub world hides secrets and challenges, and boss fights pit him against figures from his past, including the Biolizard, Metal Overlord and Mephiles. For a character whose story has always been the series' most melodramatic, it is a loving, surprisingly polished showcase.

The other half of the package is a remaster of 2011's Sonic Generations, the 20th-anniversary adventure that pairs Classic Sonic's 2D platforming with Modern Sonic's high-speed 3D boosting. The Time Eater scrambles history, so a single playthrough jumps from Green Hill and Chemical Plant to City Escape, Seaside Hill, Crisis City and Rooftop Run, each stage built twice, once for each Sonic. Rival battles against Metal Sonic, Shadow and Silver break up the journey, and the remaster brings upgraded visuals and new bonus content to a game plenty of fans already rank among the best of the modern era.

Put together, it is two full Sonic adventures from Sonic Team in a single release, and on Series X it is the easiest way to play the series' greatest-hits tour and Shadow's long-overdue moment in the spotlight back to back.
