Item Description

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the game that made the Genesis feel unstoppable. Launched in November 1992 with the "Sonic 2sday" marketing blitz, it took everything exciting about the first game and turned up the speed, the scale and the swagger. Built largely at Sega Technical Institute in California, with Yuji Naka and members of the original Japanese team on board, it became one of the best-selling games the console ever had.

The changes start with Sonic himself. The spin dash, revving in place before rocketing away, gave players instant speed and became a series staple, and Miles "Tails" Prower joined as a sidekick who follows Sonic through every zone and can be taken over by a second player at any time. The zones are some of the most memorable in platforming: the sunny loops of Emerald Hill, the rising pink Mega Mack of Chemical Plant, the flippers and slot machines of Casino Night, the gears and pistons of Metropolis, then the airborne run through Sky Chase and Wing Fortress before the final climb aboard the Death Egg. Masato Nakamura of the Japanese band Dreams Come True wrote the music, and its themes are still hummed decades later.

It also introduced ideas the series kept for years. Hit a checkpoint with 50 rings to reach the pseudo-3D half-pipe special stages, gather all seven Chaos Emeralds, and Sonic can transform into golden, invincible Super Sonic for the first time. The split-screen two-player mode lets friends race head to head through a set of zones, a competitive streak most platformers of the era never offered.

More than thirty years later, people still argue over whether this or Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the high point of classic Sonic, and that debate alone says plenty. Playing it on original Genesis hardware, with Tails tagging along and Casino Night spinning past, is the purest version of what turned Sega's mascot into a phenomenon.

About the game

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a side-scrolling platform game and the sequel to the original Sonic the Hedgehog. Players control Sonic as he traverses larger, faster-paced levels across West Side Island, collecting rings, defeating robot enemies, and pursuing Doctor Robotnik. The game introduces Sonic's sidekick Miles "Tails" Prower, a two-tailed fox who can be controlled by a second player. It also adds the spin dash move, a competitive split-screen multiplayer mode, and pseudo-3D special stages in which players collect rings to earn Chaos Emeralds.
