Complete in box: the UMD, the manual and the original case, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every game is tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Somebody is kidnapping Chao, and every team in Sonic Rivals 2 has a different theory about who is behind it. Sonic and Tails suspect Doctor Eggman. Knuckles is hunting for the vanished Master Emerald with Rouge in tow, Shadow rolls out alongside Metal Sonic, and Silver arrives from a future destroyed by an interdimensional beast called the Ifrit, with Espio along to work out whose side he is really on. Each pair gets its own campaign, and the four threads twist together around a plot to feed the captured Chao to the Ifrit.

Backbone Entertainment built the game under Sega Studio USA's supervision, with Takashi Iizuka directing, and the idea is Sonic as a head-to-head race. Stages play out in 2D across 3D environments, and you are not just beating the clock but a rival you can bump, blast with power-ups and outmaneuver on the way to the goal. This sequel expands every zone to three acts plus a boss, with the first and third acts run as races and the second as a straight battle, and gives each character four unlockable suits.

The roster grows to eight, with Tails, Espio and Rouge joining Sonic, Knuckles, Shadow, Silver and Metal Sonic. A new Free Play mode lets you run the stages as traditional Sonic levels, with Time Attack and ten hidden Chao to find, and 150 collectible cards reward the game's challenges. Local wireless multiplayer adds six battle types, including Knockout, Ring Battle, Capture the Chao, King of the Hill and Tag.

Reviews were mixed, but Sonic Rivals 2 has a loyal following as one of only two Sonic adventures made for the PSP, alongside the original Sonic Rivals. Silver and Espio as a team, Metal Sonic as a playable rival and a haunted-mansion Chao rescue make it a fun, slightly oddball corner of mid-2000s Sonic history that never appeared anywhere else.

About the game

Sonic Rivals 2 is a platforming game with 2D gameplay in a 3D environment where you race another character to the finish line of each stage, just as the first game. Characters still obtain various power ups throughout the stage to attack their rival. The Boss stages are also the same in that you have to defeat the boss before your rival does. Players still collect cards for completing various challenges. The playable character roster includes all the characters from the previous game (Sonic, Knuckles, Shadow, Silver, and Metal Sonic) along with the addition of Tails, Espio the Chameleon, and Rouge the Bat. There is an added Freeplay mode so that you may play stages previously cleared without having to race against another character. Some additions were made to the multiplayer challenges including Knockout, Ring Battle, Race, King of the Hill, Capture the Chao, and Tag play modes.
