Item Description

Dr. Eggman has built an interstellar amusement park, and naturally it is a trap. In Sonic Colors, the 2010 Wii adventure that Sega brought back as Sonic Colors: Ultimate in 2021, Eggman's Incredible Interstellar Amusement Park orbits the planet, powered by Wisps, little alien creatures he has captured for their energy. Sonic and Tails head up to investigate, and what follows is one of the brightest, most confident 3D Sonic games of its era.

The Wisps are the big idea. Free them and they lend Sonic their Color Powers: the Cyan Laser fires him through the stage as a ricocheting beam of light, the Yellow Drill tunnels underground, the Orange Rocket blasts him skyward and the Pink Spikes let him cling to walls and ceilings. Each one opens alternate routes, which gives every act a reason to replay once you have more powers in hand. The planets are a joy, from candy-coated Sweet Mountain to the neon highways of Starlight Carnival and the aquatic halls of Aquarium Park, and the stages balance high-speed boosting with surprisingly precise 2D platforming.

Ultimate builds on the original with a sharper modern presentation, a remixed soundtrack that can be swapped back to the original music, and a few new tricks. A new Wisp, Jade Ghost, lets Sonic phase through walls, Park Tokens unlock customization options for his look, and Rival Rush races pit you against Metal Sonic. A Tails Save feature can rescue you after a fall into a pit, taking some of the sting out of the trickier platforming.

Sonic Colors is often credited with getting modern Sonic back on track after a rough patch, with a lighter, funnier tone, tight level design and a soundtrack full of catchy, upbeat themes. For players who missed it on the Wii, this version is the easy way in, and it is a cheerful counterpoint to the moodier Sonic games that surround it.
