Item Description
Sonic Team took the blue blur somewhere unexpected with Sonic Battle: a 3D arena fighter on the Game Boy Advance, packed with sprite-based characters, aerial combos and a surprising amount of strategy for a handheld brawler. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Cream, Rouge and Shadow all join the fight, with E-102 Gamma and Chaos waiting to be unlocked.
The hook is the special-move system. Every fighter has Shot, Power and Trap specials, and before each battle you assign them to ground, air and defend slots. Whatever you put in the defend slot automatically blocks that type of attack, so outguessing your opponent's setup becomes a game within the game. Take hits, block or heal and you fill the Ichikoro Gauge, which turns your next special into a one-hit knockout. Up to four players can battle together, and the game tucks in a set of minigames as well, including Knuckles' Mine Hunt, a Minesweeper-style treasure search.
The story belongs to Emerl, an ancient Gizoid robot that Sonic befriends and names. Emerl learns by copying, and the skill cards you earn after battles let you build him into a custom fighter mixing moves from the whole cast. His journey from mysterious weapon to friend became memorable enough that the Sonic X anime loosely adapted it. Critics were split on the story mode, but the fighting itself earned praise for its depth, and it is easily the most unusual Sonic adventure on the GBA.
