Item Description

Two of Sonic's Game Boy Advance outings share one cartridge here, and they could hardly be more different. One is a full-speed side-scrolling platformer, the other a pinball game stuffed with Sega history. Together they make a fun snapshot of the early 2000s, when Sega's mascot had just arrived on Nintendo hardware and was clearly enjoying the visit.

Sonic Advance, developed by Dimps, was the first Sonic game on a Nintendo console, and it plays like a love letter to the Genesis originals. Four characters each change how the zones feel: Sonic for speed, Tails flying up to high routes, Knuckles gliding and climbing, and Amy Rose, in her first playable 2D appearance, swinging her hammer because she can't spin-dash. Zones such as Neo Green Hill, Casino Paradise and Ice Mountain mix loops and springs with secret paths, every zone ends in a duel with Dr. Eggman, and hidden special stages guard the Chaos Emeralds.

Sonic Pinball Party, first released in 2003, is the surprise of the pair and the one that tends to win people over. Its story mode is set in Casinopolis, the casino district of Station Square from Sonic Adventure, where Eggman has turned gamblers into robots and brainwashed Tails and Amy, and Sonic's only way to save them is to win the Egg Cup Tournament. Beyond the Sonic table sit two boards drawn from Sega's back catalog: a NiGHTS into Dreams table where you collect the Ideya and take on the Nightmaren, and a Samba de Amigo table built for pure high-score chasing. Critics rated it well at the time, and its busy, story-driven tables still make it one of the more inventive pinball games on the handheld.

The pairing is the appeal. You get Sega's speedy platforming in one game and a celebration of its Saturn and Dreamcast years in the other, with NiGHTS and Samba de Amigo tables you won't find anywhere else. It puts two very different Sonic experiences in a single GBA cartridge slot, and it captures that early stretch when Sonic, Eggman and even Sega's cult favorites were suddenly showing up on Nintendo's handheld.
