Sonic Advance 3 is here as a loose Game Boy Advance cartridge — just the game itself, ready to drop into your GBA, SP, or DS and go. Coolection has tested this one and it was running great. If you'd like a closer look before committing, just hit the "Request Additional Pictures" button on this page and we'll send you high-resolution shots of the exact cartridge in hand. Dr. Eggman's latest scheme goes spectacularly wrong in Sonic Advance 3. His Chaos Control experiment tears the planet into seven pieces, scatters Sonic's friends across them, and leaves Eggman plotting to build an empire on every fragment, with a new robot, Gemerl, rebuilt from the wreckage of Emerl from Sonic Battle, doing his dirty work. It is the final chapter of the Game Boy Advance trilogy from Dimps and Sonic Team, and the one that changed how the series plays on a handheld.
The big idea is the tag-team system. You always play as a pair chosen from Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Cream, starting with Sonic and Tails and rescuing the others as you go. The second character follows along, cleans up enemies and rings you miss, and can power up the leader with a press of the R button, and each pairing changes your abilities. That means a stage run with Knuckles at your side can feel quite different from the same stage with Cream, and finding which team opens which path is half the fun of replaying.
Each of the seven zones, from the opening Route 99 to Sunset Hill, a dusky tribute to Green Hill, and later stages like Toy Kingdom, Ocean Base and Twinkle Snow, has three acts and an Eggman boss fight, all connected by a hub world that also hides two extra-life minigames. Tracking down the ten Chao hidden across a zone's acts unlocks its Special Stage and a Chaos Emerald, and collecting all seven after the main story leads to an extra final boss and the true ending. Outside the story, two to four players can race or compete to collect Chao.
Critics rated it among the strongest handheld Sonic games, with an 81 percent average on GameRankings, and it won Handheld Game of the Year at the 2004 Golden Joystick Awards. If you have played the first two Advance games, this is where the trilogy's speed meets real experimentation.
Sonic is back, and this time, he needs the help of all of his friends to defeat the evil Dr. Eggman. In Sonic Advance 3, Sonic and Tails must reunite with their friends Cream, Knuckles, and Amy. Team up with any of the five characters to gain special attack moves: Sonic increases your speed, Tails increases your jump power, Knuckles increases your attack power, Amy offers the Piko Piko hammer attack, and Cream lets you perform a homing attack. With a Game Boy Advance link, you and three of your friends can battle it out in multiplayer modes.
