Item Description

Kart racing was one of the PlayStation's favorite pastimes by 2001, and Smurf Racer hands the steering wheel to Peyo's little blue villagers with a light, friendly touch. Developed by Artificial Mind & Movement and published by Infogrames as a budget-priced release, it lines up eight Smurfs at the start, with four more hidden ones that you earn by working through Championship mode, and sends them across nine tracks that wind through different regions and climates.

The structure is simple and sensible. Easy difficulty lets younger players simply race, while Expert brings faster karts, tougher rivals and a power meter that you refill by driving through keys scattered around the course, so picking a racing line suddenly matters. Power-ups add the usual kart-racer mischief, and some downhill stretches only show the road right in front of you, which rewards learning each track rather than just holding the accelerator.

The mode worth remembering is Flag Race: three laps with flags placed around the circuit, and the winner is whoever grabs them all first. It plays more like a scramble than a race, and it works in two-player horizontal split-screen as well as regular single races, which makes it a natural pick for a sibling or a parent sitting on the couch.

GameSpot's review compared it with Crash Team Racing and found it easy to control and refreshingly gentle for families. It is not the deepest racer on the system, but as a cheerful slice of the Smurfs on the PlayStation, and an easy first kart racer for a young player, it has plenty of charm.
