Sly Cooper comes from a long line of master thieves, and Thieves in Time finally lets you meet them. Someone is erasing pages from the Thievius Raccoonus, the Cooper family's book of stolen techniques, and the culprit is meddling with history itself. So Bentley builds a time machine, Murray fires up the van, and the gang goes back through the centuries to protect Sly's ancestors. Developed by Sanzaru Games, the studio that remastered the original trilogy, it arrived in 2013 as the first new Sly adventure since Sly 3 eight years earlier.
The ancestors are the star attraction. Rioichi Cooper in feudal Japan, the Tennessee Kid in the Wild West, Sir Galleth in medieval England, Salim al-Kupar in ancient Arabia and Bob, a prehistoric caveman Cooper, each become playable with their own moves, and each era is a big open hub full of collectibles, guards to pickpocket and jobs to scout. Sly also gathers costumes from each period, like samurai armor that lets him walk through fire, which open up new routes and puzzles.
The heist structure from Sly 2 and Sly 3 returns, with every episode building up to a multi-stage job that switches you between Sly, Bentley, Murray and, for the first time as a regular playable character, Inspector Carmelita Fox. Bentley's hacking minigames, Murray's brawling and Sly's ledge-hopping stealth keep the pacing varied, and the villain, the skunk Cyrille Le Paradox, makes a suitably theatrical foil. The cel-shaded art and slapstick humor feel right in line with the classic games.
For fans who were left with Sly 3's bittersweet ending, this is the long-awaited next chapter, and on the Vita it is a full console-size Sly adventure in handheld form. It is a big, generous platformer packed with history-themed jokes and family lore, and the place to see where the Cooper Gang's story went after the PS2 era.
Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is a stealth platformer developed by Sanzaru Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Released in 2013 for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, it is the fourth main entry in the Sly Cooper series. The game follows Sly and his gang as they travel through different historical periods to restore the Thievius Raccoonus, which is being erased from existence. Players control Sly and various characters, each with unique abilities while completing stealth-based missions, platforming challenges, and puzzles. The game retains the series’ signature cel-shaded art style and humour while introducing new mechanics, including time-travelling settings and costumes with special abilities.
