Sly Cooper doesn't so much sneak as glide. He tiptoes along ledges, shimmies up pipes, perches on the tips of spires and slips past searchlights, with a single button press snapping him to whatever narrow foothold glints nearby. That fluid, cartoonish movement is the first thing that wins you over in Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, the 2002 PlayStation 2 debut from Sucker Punch Productions.
The story is pure Saturday-morning caper. The Thievius Raccoonus, the book holding generations of Cooper family thieving techniques, has been torn apart and divided among the Fiendish Five, the gang that murdered Sly's father. With the brainy turtle Bentley on the laptop and the big-hearted hippo Murray behind the wheel, Sly sets out to steal the pages back one villain at a time, from the scheming frog Sir Raleigh and the hulking Muggshot to the voodoo crocodile Mz. Ruby, the fireworks-obsessed Panda King and the mechanical owl Clockwerk. Hot on his tail throughout is Interpol's Inspector Carmelita Fox, whose flirtatious rivalry with Sly gives the series its heart.
Each of the five worlds is a hub of individual levels where you earn keys toward the boss showdown. Hidden clue bottles open safes holding the stolen pages, and every page teaches Sly a new move. The game is old-school in its toughness: a single hit costs a life unless he is carrying a lucky horseshoe, so sneaking past guards matters as much as fighting them. Racing and shooting interludes break up the platforming and keep the pace lively.
Sucker Punch would go on to make inFAMOUS and Ghost of Tsushima, and the confident art direction and comic timing of the studio's later work are already here. The cel-shaded visuals, with their noir shadows and sly, jazzy score, still look sharp, and this is where Sly, Bentley, Murray and Carmelita begin. The heist structure grew more elaborate in the sequels, but nothing quite matches the clean, focused platforming of the original.
Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus is a stealth-platformer developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Released in 2002 for the PlayStation 2, the game follows Sly Cooper, a skilled raccoon thief, as he and his gang attempt to recover the Thievius Raccoonus, a book containing the secrets of his family's thieving legacy. The gameplay combines stealth, platforming, puzzle-solving, and light combat, and is noted for its cel-shaded visuals and humorous narrative. This game is divided into five worlds, each themed around a particular part of the world and the villain headquartered there. Most worlds are structured as a central hub with entrances to numerous individual levels. Each of the levels has a primary goals which earns the player a key. You must collect all the keys in the world to fight the world's boss. Many of the levels have a platformer structure. The objective of these worlds is to reach the location of the key. There are substantial stealth elements here as the player must dodge searchlights and trips lasers which set off alarms and avoid alerting guards. In addition to the main objective, there are clue bottles to find.
