Item Description

Sly 2: Band of Thieves is where Sucker Punch's raccoon caper turned into a full-blown heist game. Two years after the first adventure, the scattered parts of the robotic owl Clockwerk have been lifted from a museum by the Klaww Gang, and Sly, Bentley and Murray set out to grab every last piece before someone puts the monster back together.

The structure is what makes it special. Each episode drops the gang into a large, open hub, whether a Paris nightclub district, a palace in India, a prison outside Prague or the Canadian wilderness, and you work through a heist plan job by job. Bentley's slideshow briefings sketch out the scheme, recon comes before the big score, and the play shifts constantly: Sly sneaks and picks pockets, Bentley hacks computers and plants sleep darts and bombs, and Murray pummels his way through guards. When everything clicks on the final operation, it feels like a caper movie you directed yourself.

The Klaww Gang is a great rogues' gallery: the nightclub-owning counterfeiter Dimitri, the spice baron Rajan, the sinister spider Contessa, the bombastic Jean Bison and the scheming Arpeggio, with Inspector Carmelita Fox and her new partner Constable Neyla complicating every move. The sequel also added a health bar, pickpocketing for loot and the ThiefNet shop for buying gadgets and moves, which makes it far friendlier than the one-hit tension of the original.

Plenty of fans rank Band of Thieves as the high point of the trilogy, and its episodic heist format became the template Sly 3 and the later Thieves in Time built on. This is the entry where Bentley and Murray step out of the van and into the spotlight, and its ending lands an emotional punch that sets up everything that follows in Sly 3. As a PS2 platformer, few games mix stealth, humor and variety this smoothly.

About the game

Sly 2: Band of Thieves is a stealth-action platformer developed by Sucker Punch Productions and released for PlayStation 2 in 2004. Players control Sly Cooper and his gang as they attempt to dismantle the Klaww Gang and recover the scattered parts of Clockwerk. The game expands on its predecessor with open-ended mission structures, multiple playable characters, and improved stealth mechanics. The story takes place two years after Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus. In the first game, Sly was becoming a professional thief, but in Band of Thieves, he is a professional thief, so he retains all of the moves from the first game. He also earns new moves and gains different items to assist him in his dark craft. Players might start a level as Sly, and then after completing a particular task, players switch to Bentley, and Murray, respectively.
