Item Description

Years before Pitfall! made him a legend, David Crane wrote Slot Machine with an audience of one in mind: his mother, who loved playing the slots. That small, personal origin gives this early Atari cartridge a charm that its plain title hides, and it makes the game a curious footnote in the career of one of the most important designers in console history.

The idea is as straightforward as the name. You start with a supply of tokens, set your bet and spin the reels, hoping to line up matching symbols for a payout, and the game ends when your tokens run dry. One or two players can take turns at the machine, and the cartridge offers Jackpot and Payoff variations that change how the winnings come in. Because the hardware could only draw sprites eight pixels wide in a single color, Crane chose bold, easy-to-read shapes for the reels, cacti among them, which gives the whole thing a quirky desert-casino look you won't mistake for anything else.

Reviewers were never especially kind to it. Electronic Games called the graphics "workman-like if unspectacular," and Slot Machine was among the first VCS games Atari dropped from its catalog. That is exactly what makes it interesting now. It is a snapshot of the 2600's earliest days, when Atari's programmers were still working out what a home cartridge could be, and a chance to play the work of a young David Crane in 1979, just months before he left to co-found Activision and change the console business for good.
