The voice comes out of the portal. That was the moment Skylanders Trap Team won over a generation of young Portal Masters: defeat a villain, capture it in a crystal trap slotted into the Traptanium Portal, and its taunts and grumbles play from a speaker built into the portal itself, as if you had really caught it in your living room. Toys for Bob's 2014 entry builds its whole adventure around the thrill of that catch.

The story starts with Kaos blowing up Cloudcracker Prison, a fortress made entirely of Traptanium and home to Skylands' most wanted, freeing its inmates and blasting shards of the stuff down to Earth as traps. Dozens of escaped villains are on the loose, from the Chompy Mage and his puppet to the Golden Queen, the Dreamcatcher and the musical werewolf Wolfgang. Once trapped, a villain can be swapped into battle for a limited time and fights with its own moves, and many come with quests of their own, so catching the full rogues' gallery is the real long game.

The heroes got an upgrade too. The Trap Masters, a new class of Skylanders wielding Traptanium weapons, are the only ones who can smash through the Traptanium crystals that block off hidden areas, which gives every level a reason to come back with a different team. Between chapters there is plenty to do at Skylanders Academy, including the card game Skystones Smash, and Flynn's boasting and Kaos's ranting keep the series' sense of humor front and center. Two players can tackle the adventure together in split-screen co-op.

Trap Team was the last Skylanders game Toys for Bob made before Vicarious Visions took the wheel for SuperChargers, and it is the entry where the bad guys finally got their turn. It was designed around the Traptanium Portal and its traps, which is what makes the villain-catching work, and on PS4 its colorful worlds are as inviting as ever. Turning enemies into teammates is still the series' most satisfying twist.

In Skylanders Trap Team, Kaos continues his ongoing quest to rule over Skylands. He has discovered the location of the legendary Cloudcracker Prison -- a fortress built entirely out of the magical substance Traptanium and home to Skylands’ most nefarious baddies. In an attempt to build his own army of foes, Kaos blows up the prison, releasing the most wanted villains and blasting shards of Traptanium to Earth in the form of Traps. Now it’s up to Portal Masters to recapture all of the escaped villains using powerful Traptanium Traps and defeat Kaos before it’s too late!
