Pop the top half off a Skylander, snap on another hero's legs, and a brand-new character appears on screen. That trick defined Skylanders: Swap Force, and Vicarious Visions ran with it: sixteen swappable characters split at the waist into 256 possible combinations, with the top half shaping how a hero fights and the bottom half deciding how it gets around.

Those bottom halves matter, because each one carries one of eight movement types, Rocket, Spin, Dig, Stealth, Teleport, Bounce, Speed and Climb, and each opens its own kind of Swap Zone challenge. Hunting for the right legs for the job turns a toy gimmick into a real puzzle layer. Swap Force was also the first console Skylanders game to let every hero jump, a small change that made the platforming feel far more like a proper adventure, with the trickier leaps tucked into optional areas so younger players never get stuck.

The story centers on Mount Cloudbreak, a volcano that renews the magic of Skylands every hundred years, and on Kaos, who is using his Evilizer to corrupt the land's creatures with Petrified Darkness. His scheming mother Kaossandra joins the fray, Patrick Warburton's blustering Flynn is back for comic relief, and the journey runs from the village of Woodburrow through places like Mudwater Hollow, the Frostfest Mountains, Fantasm Forest and Boomtown, where Count Moneybone makes his play in the final act.

On Wii U, the GamePad shows your Skylander's stats and level objectives and supports Off-TV Play, and the game is designed around the series' Portal of Power and figures. Critics responded with the best reviews the franchise had seen, including an 89 Metacritic score for the Wii U version, and many fans still point to it as the high point of the Vicarious Visions era.

Skylanders: Swap Force is a platformer video game developed by Vicarious Visions and published by Activision. It is the third main game in the Skylanders video game and toy franchise, following 2012's Skylanders: Giants, which was a direct sequel to 2011's Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure (the spin-off of The Legend of Spyro series). It is the game before Skylanders: Trap Team and features the voices of John DiMaggio, Jess Harnell, Audrey Wasilewski, Richard Tatum, David Sobolov, Josh Keaton, Keythe Farley, Dave Wittenberg, Joey Camen, Gregg Berger, Troy Baker and Robin Atkin Downes. It is the first Skylanders game to be released in North America before other regions, unlike the previous two games where Australia got the installments first. It is also the first Skylanders game not to be owned by Vivendi.
