Item Description

Skylanders had spent four games on foot. SuperChargers put them behind the wheel. Vicarious Visions' 2015 entry introduced a new team of drivers, each with a signature vehicle figure, and suddenly the adventure stretched across land, under the sea and through the sky. Pair a SuperCharger with the vehicle built for them and the two power up together, a clever bit of toy design that made hunting down matching sets feel rewarding.

The story raises the stakes to match. Kaos has unleashed his most fearsome weapon yet, the Doomstation of Ultimate Doomstruction, and the SuperChargers, led by the fiery Spitfire and his car Hot Streak, are assembled to stop him. Levels mix the series' familiar platforming and brawling with dedicated driving, sailing and flying stretches, and switching into a vehicle shifts the pace from careful exploration to full-throttle combat. Vehicles can be upgraded and customized as you progress, so your garage grows alongside your roster.

There is a full racing mode as well, with tracks built for each vehicle type, and split-screen support makes this one of the strongest couch-multiplayer games in the series. Two players can share the campaign, and a second controller turns any track into a head-to-head grudge match. For families who loved the earlier games, it was the moment Skylanders started to feel a little like a kart racer and a little like an action adventure at the same time.

Vicarious Visions, the studio that went on to rebuild Crash Bandicoot for the N. Sane Trilogy, brought a confident technical touch, and on PS4 the bright worlds and quick driving look sharp. Like the rest of the series, SuperChargers is designed around a Portal of Power and figures, and it was built to welcome characters from the earlier Skylanders games, so it extends a collection rather than replacing it. It is the entry to pick if Spyro's friends in hot rods, submarines and jets sounds as fun today as it did in 2015.
