Item Description

Skylanders SuperChargers put the heroes behind the wheel, and it gave the series its biggest shake-up in years. Vicarious Visions built the 2015 game around vehicles: twenty new SuperCharger characters each have a signature land, sea or sky ride, and pairing a figure with its matching vehicle on the Portal of Power is designed to SuperCharge it with a power boost. Driving is woven into the adventure rather than bolted on, with levels that switch between on-foot brawling, tearing down roads, diving beneath the waves and dogfighting in the clouds.

Vehicles have their own progression, too. Gearbits collected on the road pay for upgrades and mods, so a favorite ride grows alongside its driver, and each of the three vehicle types plays differently enough to keep the campaign varied. Kaos is back as the villain, now wielding the Darkness itself, and the series' humor is in full swing, from the banter of returning favorites to the over-the-top villainy Kaos is known for.

Beyond the story, a dedicated Racing mode turns the vehicles loose on tracks for head-to-head racing, with more courses arriving through the Racing Action Packs. It is a full kart racer folded into an adventure game, and for families it often became the part everyone fought over.

The Wii U release carries a special treat for Nintendo fans. Donkey Kong with his Barrel Blaster and Bowser with his Clown Cruiser were created as crossover figures for the Nintendo versions, and each one doubles as an amiibo with a flip of its base, so they can live on both a Skylanders portal and a Nintendo shelf. That crossover, plus the vehicle-driven design, makes SuperChargers the most distinctive Skylanders chapter to own on Wii U.
