Item Description

What if the Skylander you played as was one you invented yourself? Skylanders Imaginators, the sixth mainline game in Activision's toys-to-life series, is built around that question. Using Creation Crystals, you design your own hero from scratch: choose an element and one of ten battle classes, then shape everything from the head, arms and weapons to the colors, voice and catchphrase. The result is a character nobody else has, and the game keeps handing you new parts and gear to tinker with as you play.

The story gives those creations something to fight. Kaos has discovered the ancient power of Mind Magic and is using it to raise an army of Doomlanders, so Master Eon calls on the Senseis, veteran warriors who have mastered the battle classes, to train a new generation of heroes. Combat changes noticeably from class to class, from a Knight's heavy swings to a Bowslinger's arrows and a Sorcerer's spells, and treasure chests hidden through each level keep turning up new body parts and weapons for your custom heroes. Two players can team up in co-op, which suits the series' family couch-play roots.

Imaginators also landed a crossover that made headlines: Crash Bandicoot and his nemesis Dr. Neo Cortex joined the cast as Senseis, a fun surprise for PlayStation players who had not seen Crash star in a new console game in years. Toys for Bob, the studio that launched the series with Spyro's Adventure, was back at the helm after Vicarious Visions handled SuperChargers, and the levels have the bright humor and polish that made the early games such a hit.

It turned out to be the final mainline Skylanders game, which makes it the series' last word on what toys-to-life could be, and its most open-ended entry by a wide margin. Like the rest of the series it is designed to be played with a Portal of Power and figures, with Creation Crystals unlocking your custom heroes. If you grew up with Spyro and friends, this is the chapter where the series finally handed you the design tools.
