Tree Rex stands nearly twice as tall as the original Skylanders, on the shelf and on the screen, and that sense of scale is what Skylanders: Giants is all about. Toys for Bob's 2012 follow-up to Spyro's Adventure added 16 new heroes, and eight of them are Giants: Tree Rex, Bouncer, Crusher, Eye-Brawl, Hot Head, Ninjini, Swarm and Thumpback. They lift, smash and haul their way through obstacles the regular-sized cast cannot touch, and the levels are built with plenty of moments that only a Giant can handle.

The story reaches back 10,000 years to the Arkeyan Empire, a race of robots that once enslaved Skylands until the Giants rebelled and toppled its king. In the present day, Kaos escapes his fate as a shrunken toy-store display on Earth, accidentally wakes an ancient Arkeyan Conquertron and races Captain Flynn's Dread-Yacht toward the Lost City of Arkus and the Iron Fist that powers the robot army. The writing keeps its cartoon sense of humor throughout, and Kaos's blustering villainy gets plenty of the best lines.

The toy side grew deeper too. Every figure from the first game carries forward, Series 2 reposes of returning heroes bring upgraded attributes, and the new LightCore figures glow when placed on the Portal of Power and unleash a flash attack in the game. Beyond the campaign there is a reworked Battle Mode for head-to-head play and the Skystones card minigame, while each chapter hides collectibles, hats and elemental challenge areas that reward bringing the right hero to the portal. A second player can join the campaign at any time, which is how most families remember it.

The reception matched the ambition. Giants won Family Game of the Year at the D.I.C.E. Awards, Nintendo World Report gave the Wii version 9.5 out of 10, and the franchise passed a billion dollars in sales just fifteen months after it began. Lorne Balfe's sweeping score, with a main theme by Hans Zimmer, gives the whole thing a big-screen feel. Toys for Bob built Skylanders on the Wii first, and this is the entry where the toys-to-life idea grew from a clever novelty into a full collecting hobby, with the Giants as the figures that made every shelf look different.
