Item Description

How long can you wait before pulling the ripcord? Sky Diver turns that one nerve-wracking question into a head-to-head contest. Two players leap from planes crossing the top of the screen, free-fall toward the ground and try to open their parachutes as late as they dare before drifting onto a landing pad. Open early and you play it safe for a small score; hold out until the last instant and a jump can be worth up to 11 points. Wait one beat too long and your diver meets the ground with a comic splat, legs flailing, while your rival floats down cleanly beside you.

Programmed by Jim Huether, this 1979 Atari cartridge adapts the 1978 Sky Diver arcade game designed by Owen Rubin, and it is built for two players sharing the couch. The variations change the challenge in smart ways. Some games use stationary pads, others shrink them or set them moving, and several add wind that pushes your diver off course, with a wind sock showing how hard it is blowing. Because a gust can carry an open chute well off target, reading the wind before you commit becomes part of the strategy. The Chicken variation puts a single pad in the middle of the screen, and only the first diver to touch down on it scores.

A match runs nine jumps, which makes it ideal for quick rematches and grudge matches. Sky Diver is a fine example of what early Atari designers did best: take one simple, physical idea and tune it until it becomes a test of nerve between friends.
