Skullgirls looks like a lost 1940s cartoon that learned to throw hands. Every frame of its fighters is hand-drawn, and the animation is so fluid and expressive that it stops people cold the first time they see it in motion. 2nd Encore is the expanded edition of Lab Zero Games' fighter, bringing its full roster of 14 characters to PS4 with mechanics refined through years of tournament play and community feedback.

The fighting system rewards players who dig deep. Borrowing from the Marvel vs. Capcom school of team combat, it lets you field one, two or three characters, with health and damage balanced so a lone powerhouse can stand up to a full squad. Assists are customizable, so almost any move in a character's kit can become a call-in. Lead designer Mike Zaimont, a tournament player himself, built in a system that detects and breaks infinite combos, which gives players the freedom to experiment without matches dissolving into chaos. The tutorial is often singled out as one of the best ever made for a fighting game, teaching the fundamentals of the genre rather than just this game's buttons.

The roster is where Skullgirls stakes its personality. Filia fights with a living parasite for hair, Cerebella with a hat that has arms of its own, Peacock with rubber-hose cartoon artillery, and Painwheel with a giant spinning blade grafted to her back. Ms. Fortune can quite literally throw her head at you. They all live in New Meridian, the art-deco heart of the Canopy Kingdom, where the Skull Heart grants wishes to young women and twists the wisher into the monstrous Skullgirl. Every character gets a story mode of their own, and Michiru Yamane, the composer behind Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, wrote a jazz-tinged score that fits the noir mood perfectly.

Its history makes it a fighter people root for. After the original release, fans pledged more than $800,000 through crowdfunding to keep the cast growing, which is how favorites like Squigly, Big Band, Eliza and Beowulf joined the lineup. The result is a cult favorite with a devoted competitive scene, and 2nd Encore on PS4 is a satisfying way to own the edition that gathered all of that work into one package.
