Our grade: Near Mint. Pictured: this printing of the card. Every card ships triple-sleeved — a soft sleeve, a deck sleeve and a rigid top loader.
Very few cards carry a reputation like Skullclamp. One mana to cast, one mana to equip, and a deal that sounds modest until you do the math: the equipped creature gets +1/-1, and whenever it dies, you draw two cards. Put it on a 1/1 token and the token dies on the spot, leaving you two cards richer for a single mana. Then move it to the next token and do it again. Within months of its debut in Darksteel it was banned in Standard, and its name has been shorthand for raw card advantage ever since.
In Commander, Skullclamp turns any deck that makes small creatures into a draw engine. Token makers, sacrifice and aristocrats strategies, and go-wide builds all get to convert spare bodies into fresh cards, and even a larger creature about to die in combat leaves two cards behind on its way out. It is colorless, so it slots into almost any list that wants to keep its hand full.
This is the Secret Lair Drop printing from Special Guest: Yoji Shinkawa, collector number 1112, a borderless foil illustrated by Yoji Shinkawa. Best known as the character and mechanical designer behind the Metal Gear Solid series, Shinkawa brings his loose, kinetic ink-brush style to Magic, and an artifact as notorious as Skullclamp makes a fitting subject.
