Item Description
Vyse does not set out to save the world. He sets out to sail. Overworks' sky-pirate RPG Skies of Arcadia captured that spirit of adventure on the Dreamcast in 2000, and Skies of Arcadia Legends carried it to the GameCube with even more to find. Its world is a scatter of floating continents above an endless sky, where the Blue Rogues, pirates who raid only the armed ships of the Valuan Empire, can make a living and a name for themselves.
Vyse sets out with his childhood friend Aika and Fina, a mysterious girl from a lost civilization, to stop the Valuan Empire from gathering the six Moon Stones and awakening the ancient Gigas. Battles are turn-based but built around a shared pool of Spirit Points that every party member draws on for special moves, so planning a turn becomes a team decision. Weapons shift between elemental colors drawn from the moons, and every so often the crew takes the helm for a full ship battle, a tense, turn-by-turn duel of cannons, torpedoes and timing against Valuan warships and colossal sky creatures.
Exploration is where Skies really soars. Hidden Discoveries are scattered across the map, from strange landmarks to forgotten ruins, and charting them earns gold and reputation as Vyse's Swashbuckler rating grows. Over time you recruit a crew and build up a base on Crescent Isle, turning a small band of pirates into a real fleet. The colorful cast, including the grizzled old sailor Drachma and the roguish captain Gilder, carries a story full of warmth and optimism, set to a sweeping score by Yutaka Minobe and Tatsuyuki Maeda.
Legends is the version fans point newcomers toward. It adds Piastol, a bounty hunter with a personal score to settle with Vyse, new Discoveries, a Wanted List of bounties and a Moonfish-hunting side quest, folds in bonus content Dreamcast owners could only download, and trims back the random encounters that slowed the original. It is the definitive way to play one of the warmest, most adventurous RPGs of its generation, and the voyage that turned a Dreamcast cult favorite into a GameCube treasure.
