Skate 2 is what happens when a series refuses to make skateboarding easy. EA Black Box's 2009 sequel keeps the flick-it control scheme that made the original such a sharp break from the Tony Hawk formula: the right stick is your feet, and every ollie, kickflip and heelflip comes from the motion of your thumb. Pull back and snap forward to pop an ollie, roll the stick to flip the board, and the result feels physical in a way button-combo skating never did. A clean line in Skate 2 feels earned because your own hands made every part of it happen.
The setting gives that skill a cause. Five years after you vanished from the scene, a disaster too gnarly to name has leveled much of San Vanelona, and Mongocorp has rebuilt it as New San Vanelona, guarding every plaza and ledge of its private property and turning skaters into trespassers. Your job is to rebuild your career and win the city back, one spot at a time. The biggest new idea is that you can finally step off the board: walk around, drag benches, ramps and rails into position to build the line you have been picturing, and call on a crew of locals when Mongocorp's security gets in the way.
The trick vocabulary roughly doubles from the first game, adding handplants, footplants and other old-school moves to the flips, grinds and grabs, and the city is packed with pro challenges, magazine shoots and races. The Hall of Meat returns to reward your most spectacular bails, scoring broken bones and full-body slams, which makes wiping out almost as entertaining as landing. A full replay editor lets you cut your best and worst moments into skate videos, and online sessions were a big part of the launch package.
Skate 2 is the entry where the series' systems fully clicked, bridging the original's breakthrough and the crew-focused Skate 3, and its ragdoll physics have turned more than a few botched transfers into accidental highlight reels. On the Xbox 360 it is the purest form of the late-2000s skateboarding revival, a game that rewards patience, creativity and style over score-chasing combos.

After the mass evacuation, one company, Mongocorp, won the bid to rebuild New San Vanelona and their zealous protection of their private property has put a damper on the once thriving skate population. Your mission is to rebuild your career and revive the New San Van skate scene. To help you get the job done, you'll have double the tricks and the new ability to get off your board to move stuff and create the sickest lines. There's even a crew of locals you can call on to help take care of business. Skate 2--it's time to take back the city ... one spot at a time.
