Item Description

SimCity asks you to run a town. SimEarth asks you to run a world, across a lifespan of ten billion years, and to coax life from single cells all the way to a civilization that can leave the planet behind. It was the most ambitious of Maxis's early simulations, and this Super Nintendo version, published by FCI, puts that planetary sandbox on a cartridge.

The game is built on James Lovelock's Gaia hypothesis, the idea that a planet's life, atmosphere, oceans and geology behave like a single self-regulating system, and Lovelock himself advised Maxis on the design. You tune the atmosphere's gases and the climate, drift continents, raise mountains, set the pace of reproduction and mutation, and seed the oceans with primitive life. Every intervention spends from a limited energy budget, so you learn to nudge rather than bulldoze, and when nudging fails there are tidal waves, earthquakes and other upheavals to reshape the map.

The joy is in what evolves. Intelligence is not reserved for mammals, so with the right conditions a completely different branch of life can rise to dominance, and once a species reaches sentience its civilization climbs through the ages from stone tools toward an advanced Nanotech era before launching itself into space. Along the way pollution, disease, famine, war and global warming push back, and a thriving planet can slide into crisis surprisingly quickly if you stop paying attention. The Super Nintendo version even shows amoebas in place of the computer original's eukaryotes.

Computer Gaming World called SimEarth "absolutely fascinating," it won the Software Publishers Association's award for Best Simulation Program, and Entertainment Weekly gave the Super Nintendo edition an A-minus while noting it suits older players best. It is the cerebral side of the console at its most expansive, a slow, contemplative game of cause and effect that makes a striking companion to SimCity on the same shelf.

About the game

The most ambitious and far-reaching of Maxis’ Sim lineage, Sim Earth puts you in charge of an entire planet throughout its 10 billion year lifespan. Your ultimate task is to guide the planet’s inhabitants into the stars, from its humble single-celled roots. The main threats you face include pollution, disease, famine, war and global warming. The controls available to you include the chance to move mountains and continents, creating different levels of species, and unleash tidal waves and earthquakes so as to reshape your planet. All of these things take from your limited energy, which must be replenished.
