Item Description
The U.S. submarine force earned the nickname the Silent Service in World War II, and this cartridge makes you understand why. A smudge of smoke appears on the chart, you creep in at periscope depth, line up a torpedo shot on a freighter steaming in the middle of a convoy, and then you wait, counting the seconds as the escorting destroyer swings around toward your bearing. Few NES games ask for that kind of patience, and fewer reward it with such a jolt when the hit finally lands.
Silent Service began as Sid Meier's 1985 computer simulation for MicroProse, one of the games that made Meier's name years before Pirates! and Civilization. Konami's Ultra Games label brought it to the NES in 1989, with the conversion handled by Rare, then one of the busiest and most technically gifted studios working on Nintendo's console. The result keeps the thinking-player heart of the original while trimming it to fit a controller and a cartridge.
You command a U.S. fleet submarine in the Pacific, managing speed, depth, the periscope, your torpedoes and the deck gun as you move between the boat's views and the navigation charts. Torpedo and Gun Practice lets you learn the ropes against unarmed ships, Combat Tactics drops you into set-piece engagements against specific targets, and War Patrols turns you loose to hunt across the ocean and run up your total tonnage sunk. The best moments come after the attack: diving deep and slipping away while depth charges rumble overhead is pure slow-burn tension.
On a console famous for platformers and shooters, Silent Service is a different kind of game entirely, a chess match played underwater. It is the cartridge for the World War II history buff, the strategy player who likes to think three moves ahead, and the NES collector who wants Sid Meier's early work represented on Nintendo hardware.
