Item Description

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories opens with a question, not a monster. A psychiatrist, Dr. Michael Kaufmann, sits across from you and starts asking about your relationships, your habits and your honesty, and the answers you give quietly reshape the game you are about to play. Characters change appearance and attitude, dialogue shifts, and the town itself takes on a different tone depending on the profile it builds of you.

Beneath that framework is a reimagining of the original Silent Hill story. Harry Mason wakes after a car crash and searches a snowbound town for his missing daughter, Cheryl. Climax Studios removed combat entirely: when the world freezes over into the series' new nightmare realm, a landscape of ice, Harry has no weapons and must run, vault, hide and topple obstacles behind him to escape the creatures giving chase. Those pursuits are tense in a completely different way from the series' usual fights.

Harry's cell phone is the other star. He uses it to call numbers found around town, take photographs, check a GPS map and receive messages, and bursts of static lead him to echoes of the town's past that reveal fragments of other people's stories. It makes exploration feel investigative rather than combative, and with no weapons to scavenge, the focus stays on atmosphere and the slow unraveling of what is really going on. The PS2 version, released after the 2009 Wii original, brings it all to a standard controller.

Shattered Memories was also Akira Yamaoka's final Silent Hill score before he left Konami, with Mary Elizabeth McGlynn again providing vocals, and its closing revelation is among the most discussed in the series. Critics praised its daring and its psychological profiling, and it has aged into a favorite for players who value the series' ideas over its combat. Play it alongside the original Silent Hill and the contrast becomes the point: the same names and the same town, retold as something colder, more personal and harder to forget.

About the game

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is the seventh installment in the Silent Hill survival horror series, and a stand-alone reimagining of the original Silent Hill video game. Once again, you will cast Harry Mason searching across the haunted town for his missing daughter Cheryl. Through his exploration, Harry will come across objects and recordings that tell some of the history of Silent Hill. New to the series are a depiction of Silent Hill's demonic alter-dimension as a world of ice, and the removal of weapons from the game: when the monsters come out, Harry must literally run for his life. Between scenes, the game will cut to a psychiatrist's office, who asks personal questions about Harry and his past experiences. The game will then alter itself based on the player's responses, changing characters and lines of dialog to something intended to be more personally uncomfortable.
