Item Description

Before Harry Mason ever drove into town, a trucker named Travis Grady took a shortcut through Silent Hill and pulled a girl from a burning house. Silent Hill Origins follows what happened next, and in doing so fills in the backstory of Alessa Gillespie, her mother Dahlia and the cult that set the whole series in motion.

The defining mechanic is the mirror. Rather than being dragged between worlds at the story's whim, Travis can touch certain mirrors to cross between the foggy town and its rusted Otherworld counterpart, which turns exploration into a puzzle of its own as rooms and routes change from one side to the other. His path runs through series landmarks including Alchemilla Hospital, Cedar Grove Sanitarium, the Artaud Theater and the Riverside Motel, and the deeper he goes, the more the town digs into his own family history.

Combat is scrappier than in earlier games. Melee weapons break with use, so Travis is always improvising, and he can hurl heavy one-shot objects like typewriters and television sets at whatever crawls out of the dark. There is no on-screen health bar; the edges of the screen bleed red when he is close to death. Akira Yamaoka returned to compose, and the score carries his trademark blend of industrial noise and melancholy.

Origins was the first Silent Hill developed outside Japan. Climax built it for the PSP before it came to the PlayStation 2 in 2008, and it leans into fan service in the best sense, revisiting the places and faces of the original game from a new angle. Players who know the 1999 classic get the pleasure of watching its tragedy set up piece by piece, while newcomers get a compact, atmospheric way into the series' mythology on the console that hosted so much of it.

About the game

Silent Hill: Origins is the fifth installment in the Silent Hill survival horror series, and a prequel to the original game. As in the previous entries, the player move back and forth between nightmare and real versions of the town, gathering items used to solve puzzles and open up new areas. Monsters of various types provide obstacles and, in series tradition, are mostly disturbingly twisted versions of humanity. The main character can fight with his bare fists or use melee weapons. Unlike previous games in the series, melee weapons break after a time. There are also one-shot items that can be thrown and several guns. There is no HUD, but the edge of the screen turns red when the protagonist is near death.
