Item Description

A letter from a wife who has been dead for three years. A teenager's ordinary afternoon at the mall that slides, without warning, into nightmare. Silent Hill HD Collection gathers two of the most admired horror games of the PlayStation 2 era, Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3, and brings them to the PlayStation 3 with high-definition visuals and Trophy support.

In Silent Hill 2, James Sunderland drives to the fog-bound lakeside town because his wife Mary has written asking him to meet her there, even though she died three years earlier. What follows is a slow, unnerving study of grief and guilt, populated by lost souls like Angela and Eddie, by Maria, a woman who looks uncannily like Mary, and by Pyramid Head, the series' most infamous monster. Akira Yamaoka's music and sound design do as much to build the dread as anything you see on screen.

Silent Hill 3 follows Heather Mason, whose day out turns into a descent through a shopping mall, a subway, Brookhaven Hospital and finally the town itself, as a cult led by Claudia Wolf closes in on her. It is a direct sequel to the original Silent Hill, and its otherworld of rust, blood and pulsing flesh is the series at its most grotesque. Heather is a sharp, sardonic lead, and her story pays off threads that began with Harry Mason's search for his daughter.

The collection was ported by Hijinx Studios and features a newly recorded voice cast, with Troy Baker as James; Silent Hill 2 lets you switch back to the original performances, while Silent Hill 3 uses the new dub. Purists debated its changes, especially the thinner fog in Silent Hill 2, and the PS3 version received a 2012 patch addressing frame rate, fog and audio sync that the Xbox 360 version never got. Two landmark psychological horror games on a single PlayStation 3 disc is a rare pairing, and it makes this a natural centerpiece for a horror shelf.

About the game

Silent Hill HD Collection is a compilation of remastered ports of Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3. The core play mechanics and story for all games remained mostly the same with some artistic changes in the remastered versions. Both games have had a graphics overhaul to allow them to support modern 720p resolution on consoles, as well as run at locked 30 frames per second. They also feature an alternate voice dub, as well as PlayStation Network Trophies and Xbox 360 Achievements. Players have the option to switch between the original voice acting and the alternate voice acting for Silent Hill 2, while the re-dub is mandatory for Silent Hill 3 because it lacks the original voice acting.
