For most of Silent Hill 4: The Room, the most frightening place in the game is home. Henry Townshend is sealed inside Room 302 of South Ashfield Heights. The door is chained shut, the windows won't open, the phone is dead, and nobody hears him pound on the walls. Then a hole appears in the bathroom wall, and the only way out is to crawl through it.
Team Silent built the game around that contrast. Inside the apartment the camera shifts to first person, and Henry can peer through the peephole at the hallway or gaze out his window at a city carrying on without him. Through the hole lie the nightmare worlds, from a subway and a forest to a water prison and a hospital, each tied to the victims of serial killer Walter Sullivan and his ritual of the 21 Sacraments. Later in the game the apartment itself turns, as hauntings seep into the rooms Henry once relied on to rest and recover. It is one of the cleverest pieces of structural horror the series ever attempted.
Combat plays a bigger role than in earlier entries, with tighter spaces and more enemies, and the ghosts that stalk the later stages can't be put down by ordinary means; only the rare Swords of Obedience pin them in place. In the second half Henry is joined by his neighbor Eileen Galvin, whose safety becomes your responsibility. Akira Yamaoka's score is among his darkest, with Mary Elizabeth McGlynn lending vocals to songs such as "Room of Angel" and "Your Rain." Longtime players will also catch the building superintendent's surname: Frank Sunderland.
The Room began life as a separate project before it was reshaped into a Silent Hill game, which helps explain why it feels so unlike its predecessors and why fans have argued about it ever since. It was also the last entry made by the original Team Silent before the series moved to other studios. Two decades on, its trapped-apartment premise, the dread of a safe room that stops being safe and Walter's tragic backstory have earned it a devoted cult following, and it is the strangest, most personal chapter of the PS2 Silent Hill run.
Silent Hill 4: The Room is the fourth installment in the Silent Hill survival horror series. The game is similar to the past entries in terms of atmosphere, never letting the player know what's behind the next corner or down the street. Aside from the traditional third-person-view, there is now a first-person mode which is used to control the main character when he is in his apartment. Objects that can be interacted with are highlighted by eyeball icons. The previous games in the series have mostly been about exploring the town and solving puzzles, but this installment has much more combat involved. There are more enemies in a given area, spread in cramped spaces. The main character mostly uses a standard Silent Hill arsenal of weapons, such as the steel pipe, pistol and a golf club.
