Henry Townshend cannot leave his apartment. The front door is chained shut from the inside, the phone is dead, nobody seems to hear him pound on the walls, and the only way out is a ragged hole that has opened up in his bathroom. Silent Hill 4: The Room builds its whole nightmare on that claustrophobic premise, and it is the boldest experiment in Konami's survival horror series: a game that spends most of its time outside Silent Hill itself, in the drab city of Ashfield, and turns the one place you should feel safe into the thing you come to dread.
Room 302 is explored from a first-person view, and those quiet stretches are some of the most unsettling in the series. You can press up against the window and watch the city carry on without you, check the peephole for whatever is waiting in the hallway, or spy on your neighbor Eileen Galvin through a crack in the wall. Crawl through the hole and the game shifts to third person, dropping Henry into a string of twisted otherworlds, among them a subway station, a forest and a water prison, each tied to the crimes of the serial killer Walter Sullivan. Back home, things slowly go wrong. Hauntings creep into the apartment, and the refuge you have been retreating to starts working against you.
Team Silent also made this the most combat-focused Silent Hill up to that point, with more enemies packed into tighter spaces. Some of them are ghosts that a steel pipe or pistol can only knock down for a moment; they have to be pinned in place with special swords before they stop coming. In the second half Eileen joins Henry, and keeping her alive as you revisit earlier worlds changes the tension of every encounter. That return trip divides players, but it is also where the story's threads pull tight.
The Room rewards players who know the series. Walter Sullivan first surfaced in a newspaper clipping in Silent Hill 2, and this game turns that throwaway detail into a full story about the town's cult and its ritual of the 21 Sacraments. Akira Yamaoka's score, with vocal tracks sung by Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, is among his most melancholy work. It was also the last game made by the original Team Silent, which gives it a special place on the shelf: the closing chapter of the team that defined psychological horror on consoles, playable here on the original Xbox hardware it was released for.
Silent Hill 4: The Room is the fourth installment in the Silent Hill survival horror series. The game is similar to the past entries in terms of atmosphere, never letting the player know what's behind the next corner or down the street. Aside from the traditional third-person-view, there is now a first-person mode which is used to control the main character when he is in his apartment. Objects that can be interacted with are highlighted by eyeball icons. The previous games in the series have mostly been about exploring the town and solving puzzles, but this installment has much more combat involved. There are more enemies in a given area, spread in cramped spaces. The main character mostly uses a standard Silent Hill arsenal of weapons, such as the steel pipe, pistol and a golf club.
