Item Description

In Shining Resonance Refrain, the heroes go to war with music. Their weapons are Armonics, magical instruments granted by a dragon of old, and when the party plays together a song can turn the tide of a battle. Media.Vision's action RPG puts a reluctant young man named Yuma at the center of it all. He carries the soul of the Shining Dragon, a power the invading Lombardian Empire badly wants for itself, and the burden of being a living weapon drives much of the story across the island of Alfheim.

Combat runs in real time, with each character spending Action Points on attacks and skills while you hunt for openings with Force and Break attacks that leave enemies immobile and exposed. The B.A.N.D. system is the signature twist: land hits to fill the BPM gauge and the party launches into a song whose buffs depend on who takes the Center role. Yuma can also unleash his Shining Dragon form, a devastating transformation that runs on MP and, if pushed too far, starts lashing out at friend and foe alike. Strong bonds pay off in battle, too, as allies become more likely to jump in with Resonance support actions.

Between fights, the game is just as invested in its cast. Princess Sonia fights with sword and shield, Kirika draws a holy bow from the back line, Agnum plays a guitar Armonic, and Rinna and the rest of the party fill out a group you get to know through dialogue choices and campfire Night Events, where Yuma invites a companion to spend the evening together. The bright, anime-styled character art by Tony Taka gives the whole adventure the look of Sega's modern Shining series.

Refrain is the version that finally brought the 2014 PlayStation 3 original to the West, remastered at a higher resolution and 60 frames per second, rebalanced, and packed with the original's DLC, new costumes and a new theme song. Refrain Mode adds two extra party members who were paid DLC in Japan, one of them pulled from the villains' side, while the Original mode tells the story as it first played out. It is the complete form of a cult Sega RPG, and the first chance English-speaking players had to hear it.
