Item Description

Flynn is a farm boy from the medieval kingdom of Mikado when a ritual gauntlet chooses him as a Samurai, one of the elite warriors sworn to protect the realm. Soon after taking the oath he is hunting demons, and before long the trail leads down through the earth to something nobody in Mikado was supposed to know about: a ruined, demon-infested Tokyo, sealed in gloom beneath a vast ceiling of stone. That reveal is a highlight of the 3DS era, and Shin Megami Tensei IV only gets stranger and darker from there.

Atlus' Press Turn combat system is the engine of the whole experience. Hitting an enemy's weakness or landing a critical strike earns extra actions, while a miss or a blocked attack throws turns away, so every fight becomes a tense calculation that cuts both ways. Demons that would happily kill you can also be talked into joining you through the series' famously unpredictable negotiation, where they demand items, money, flattery or answers to bizarre questions. At the fusion menu, demons combine into new and stronger allies that inherit the skills you choose, and the Smirk status turns a single good moment into a devastating follow-up.

Flynn's fellow Samurai give the struggle its philosophical spine. Walter is drawn toward freedom and chaos, Jonathan toward order and law, and Isabeau stands between them, and the choices you make along the way decide which path wins out. Burroughs, the dry-witted AI navigator who lives in Flynn's gauntlet, guides you through a Tokyo carved up by rival factions, from the Hunter Association to the ruthless Ashura-kai and the Ring of Gaea. Ryota Kozuka's soundtrack swings between orchestral grandeur and grinding rock, and the bestiary is a who's who of mythology drawn from cultures around the world.

Shin Megami Tensei IV was the first numbered entry since Nocturne nearly a decade earlier, and it went big: dozens of side quests, hundreds of demons and multiple endings that reward a second playthrough. If you want the full intensity of Megaten in the palm of your hand, this is the 3DS game to own.

About the game

Building on the styles of ATLUS' Persona, Devil Summoner, and Devil Survivor titles, SMTIV is the first true successor to 2004's Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. The story of SMTIV revolves around the Samurai, the sacred protectors of the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado. As a newly appointed Samurai, players will struggle with factions that have nefarious designs on the world as they defend their home kingdom from a growing army of demons. Decisions players make throughout the course of the story will have lasting repercussions, as the fate of the world hangs in the balance.
