Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.
In the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado, every eighteen-year-old comes to the Gauntlet Rite hoping to be chosen as a Samurai, and Flynn, a farmer's son from a small village, is the one the gauntlet accepts. What begins as a medieval fantasy about a knightly order hunting demons takes a dramatic turn once Flynn and his fellow Samurai descend beneath the kingdom and discover a ruined, demon-ridden Tokyo that has been hidden below them all along. Shin Megami Tensei IV was billed as the first true successor to Nocturne, and that twist is only the start.
The Press Turn combat is fast and unforgiving: exploit a weakness or land a critical hit and you earn extra actions, miss and the enemy gets the same chance against you. New to this entry is the Smirk, a state that powers up your next move and can swing a battle either way, since demons can Smirk too. Demons are recruited by talking to them mid-battle, haggling, flattering and answering their strange questions, and fusion combines them into stronger allies that inherit their skills. Burroughs, the dry-witted AI living in Flynn's gauntlet, manages apps that upgrade everything from skill slots to negotiation.
Flynn's fellow Samurai Walter, Jonathan and Isabeau hold clashing views on order, freedom and humanity's future, and those views map onto the series' classic Law, Chaos and Neutral paths. The choices you make push you toward one of several endings, and the game takes its philosophical questions seriously without losing its sense of adventure. Tokyo itself is a highlight, with an overworld of ruined districts, factions like the Ashura-kai and the Ring of Gaea, and quests that send you into every corner of the city.
Masayuki Doi's character designs give the cast a fresh, modern look, the demon roster draws on decades of the series' mythological art, and the music moves between somber and thrilling in all the right places. Released in 2013, it proved a mainline Shin Megami Tensei could work at full scale on a handheld and set the stage for Apocalypse three years later. Play this one first and the sequel's revelations land twice as hard.
Building on the styles of ATLUS' Persona, Devil Summoner, and Devil Survivor titles, SMTIV is the first true successor to 2004's Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. The story of SMTIV revolves around the Samurai, the sacred protectors of the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado. As a newly appointed Samurai, players will struggle with factions that have nefarious designs on the world as they defend their home kingdom from a growing army of demons. Decisions players make throughout the course of the story will have lasting repercussions, as the fate of the world hangs in the balance.
