Item Description

The first Digital Devil Saga ended with its warriors climbing out of the Junkyard toward a promised paradise. Digital Devil Saga 2 shows them what was actually waiting: a ruined real world beneath a black sun whose light turns human beings to stone. Serph and his companions are still carrying the demonic powers, and the terrible hunger, that came with their transformation, and the sequel drives their story to its end as the second and final half of Atlus's duology.

Combat is built on the Press Turn system that Atlus refined across its Shin Megami Tensei games. Hit an enemy's weakness or land a critical and you earn extra actions; whiff against a resistance and you throw turns away, and the enemy plays by exactly the same rules. Every encounter becomes a tense game of exploiting elements before they exploit you. The party still devours its foes to grow stronger, and Digital Devil Saga 2 adds a new Berserk Mode and a reworked Mantra grid, the skill web through which each character learns new abilities, giving more room to build a team your own way.

The presentation is pure Atlus at its peak. Kazuma Kaneko's character and demon designs give each fighter a striking human form and an even more striking demonic one, and Shoji Meguro's score blends rock, electronic and orchestral textures into music that pushes the action forward and lingers in the quiet moments. The story borrows its vocabulary from Hindu and Buddhist thought, with mantras, karma and atma woven into the game's systems, and it asks hard questions about hunger, humanity and what people will do to survive.

For anyone who finished the first game, this is the payoff, the half of the story where the mysteries of the Junkyard are finally explained. It is a cornerstone of the PS2's Shin Megami Tensei lineup alongside Nocturne and the Persona entries, and a fine way to complete the duology on the shelf.
