Item Description
The email arrives describing, in vivid detail, how someone near you will die tomorrow. Then you look up and notice numbers floating over strangers' heads, counting down the days they have left. That is daily life in Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked, where Tokyo's Yamanote Circle has been sealed off by the military, demons have begun appearing in the streets, and the protagonist and his friends Atsuro and Yuzu find themselves holding modified handhelds called COMPs that can summon demons of their own. The prophetic Laplace Mail keeps arriving, and every message is a puzzle about who can still be saved.
Atlus built it as a tactical RPG with an unmistakable Megaten twist. Battles play out on a grid where each unit is a human leader backed by up to two demons, and when units clash the view drops into a quick first-person exchange of spells and strikes in which hitting a weakness earns an extra action. You bid on new demons at an in-game Demon Auction, combine them through fusion, and use Skill Crack to steal abilities by marking an enemy's skill before battle and defeating the demon that carries it. Building a squad whose members cover each other's weaknesses is half the fun; the other half is watching a carefully planned turn go horribly wrong.
The story unfolds as a countdown across a single week. Every conversation and battle moves the clock forward, so you can't be everywhere at once, and your choices about whom to save and whom to trust steer the plot toward one of several very different endings. Suzuhito Yasuda, the artist behind Durarara!!, designed the cast, and his sharp, stylish character art gives the lockdown's mix of students, a pop idol, gang leaders and cult members a distinct look.
Overclocked is the expanded 3DS edition of the 2009 Nintendo DS original. It adds voice acting for almost every line of dialogue, new demons, enhanced art and an extra Eighth Day that continues the story's routes past their original endpoints. It is the version to play if you want the full week, and then one more day, of Tokyo under siege.
