Item Description

Lo Wang has a katana, a mouth that never stops running and a talent for turning demon slaying into a comedy routine. Shadow Warrior is Flying Wild Hog's 2013 reboot of 3D Realms' 1997 Build-engine shooter, published by Devolver Digital and brought to consoles in 2014, and it keeps the original's irreverent spirit while rebuilding everything else around fast, physical combat.

The story starts with a simple errand. Wang, an assassin working for the powerful businessman Orochi Zilla, is sent to buy a legendary sword called the Nobitsu, and the deal goes spectacularly wrong as demons pour into the world. Along the way he finds himself stuck with Hoji, a banished demon with his own agenda, and their running banter carries the game's humor while slowly revealing a story with more heart than its one-liners suggest.

The katana is the centerpiece. Directional inputs paired with attacks trigger special sword techniques, from sweeping area slashes to a lunging thrust, and carving through demons is messy, fast and deeply satisfying. Firearms fill out the arsenal, among them pistols, submachine guns, a shotgun, a crossbow and a rocket launcher, and three upgrade tracks let you shape Wang your way: money buys weapon upgrades, karma earned in combat unlocks skills, and Ki crystals open up new powers, including healing. Large, colorful levels hide secret areas and winking nods to the 1997 game for players who go looking.

The reboot was warmly received for rescuing a cult series from its dated reputation, keeping its love of over-the-top violence and crude gags while giving Wang and Hoji a story worth following. It led to two sequels, but this first entry is the one where the sword sits most firmly at the center of everything, and it makes a fast, funny change of pace from shooters that take themselves far too seriously.
