Item Description

A ninja crouches on a rooftop, a samurai waits behind a paper wall, and below them a guard's cone of vision sweeps slowly across a lantern-lit courtyard. In Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, everything hinges on what that guard can see, and the pleasure lies in making sure he never sees you. Mimimi Games' real-time tactics game, published by Daedalic Entertainment, debuted on PC in 2016 and reached Xbox One the following year, and it is a worthy modern heir to the Commandos series, set in Japan in 1615 as a fragile new peace under the shogun is threatened by a conspiracy led by a mysterious figure called Kage-sama.

You command five specialists whose skills fit together like the pieces of a puzzle. Hayato is the ninja, quick with a shuriken and a sword; Mugen, the samurai, can take on several guards at once and carry two bodies to safety; Yuki, the youngest, sets traps and lures enemies toward them; Aiko is a master of disguise who can distract guards and lead them astray; and the veteran Takuma covers the team from long range with his sniper rifle and his pet tanuki, Kuma. Learning which combination cracks a particular camp is the heart of the game.

Shadow Mode is the feature that makes it sing. You can plan an action for each member of the team and trigger them all at once, so three guards drop in the same instant before anyone can raise the alarm. Every encounter has multiple solutions, the quick save is always a button press away, and you can hide bodies, climb walls and leap from roof to roof to strike from above. Each mission also carries optional badges that challenge you to replay it a different way, which is exactly why the detailed maps hold up to repeat attempts.

Underneath the stealth sits a surprisingly moving story about loyalty and the cost of serving power, told through the banter of a team that grows on you mission by mission. Mimimi went on to make Desperados III and Shadow Gambit before the studio closed in 2023, and Shadow Tactics is the game that put the small German team on the map and helped bring the stealth-tactics genre back to consoles. It rewards players who like to think three moves ahead.
