Item Description

In 1989, Shadow of the Beast was the game Amiga owners loaded to show off their computers. Reflections built it as a graphics showcase, with up to twelve layers of parallax scrolling, a brooding score by David Whittaker and a world unlike anything else on store shelves. Its journey to NEC's CD-ROM hardware is one of the more surprising stories in the TurboGrafx-CD library.

The tale is pure dark fantasy. Aarbron was kidnapped as a child and twisted by magic into a monstrous warrior-servant of the beast lord Maletoth, until the sight of a man being executed, a man he recognizes as his father, brings his memories rushing back. What follows is a long, grim journey of revenge across alien landscapes, starting with nothing but his fists and gradually earning stronger attacks as he battles Maletoth's creatures and the hulking bosses that guard the way. Its designers admitted they wanted it to be as difficult as possible, and it shows: progress is earned a few screens at a time, and every new stretch of scenery feels like a reward for surviving the last one.

The TurboGrafx-CD conversion was handled by DMA Design, the Scottish studio that would soon create Lemmings and, later, Grand Theft Auto. Victor Musical Industries released it in Japan in 1992, and the CD format brought a new soundtrack arrangement by Chris Howlett and Ian Henderson of DC Productions, giving Whittaker's haunting themes a fuller, richer sound.

Shadow of the Beast spawned two sequels and a 2016 PlayStation 4 reimagining, and in 1996 Computer Gaming World placed it 76th on its list of the best computer games ever released. The TurboGrafx-CD version is a fascinating crossroads: a landmark British computer game, rebuilt by the team behind Lemmings for a Japanese console, with a CD-arranged score you won't hear in the Amiga original.
