Few anime casts are as much fun to spend time with as the Seven Deadly Sins, a band of disgraced legendary knights led by Meliodas, a cheerful, deceptively boyish captain who runs a tavern alongside his talking pig companion Hawk. The Seven Deadly Sins: Knights of Britannia was the franchise's first console game, and it turns those characters loose in big, destructible arenas built for the kind of flashy, scenery-wrecking brawls the series is known for.
Adventure Mode follows the anime's opening arc. Princess Elizabeth seeks out the scattered Sins to stand against the Holy Knights who have seized the kingdom of Liones, and you travel across Britannia from battle to battle as the story unfolds, unlocking more of the cast and more stages along the way. Each Sin plays with different strengths and powers. Combat is built from light, heavy and magic attacks, with special moves and a meter-charged super for every character, and the surroundings crumble as fights escalate.
Duel Mode takes everything you have unlocked into head-to-head fights against the computer or a friend on the same couch, which is where the game is at its most fun: picking a favorite Sin and settling the argument about who would really win. Developed by Natsume Atari and published by Bandai Namco in 2018, it is a fan's game first. Critics found the combat simple and the adventure linear, and that is fair, but the appeal was never complexity. It is the chance to step into Nakaba Suzuki's world and play out showdowns the anime only let you watch.
As the moment the franchise first jumped from manga and anime onto a home console, Knights of Britannia makes a natural shelf companion to the series, and a light, easygoing brawler for an evening with the Sins.
