Item Description

Clank has always been the brains of the Ratchet & Clank partnership, and Secret Agent Clank finally gives him the tuxedo, the gadgets and the spotlight. The spin-off takes the Secret Agent Clank TV-show bits players had glimpsed in the main series and turns the gag into a full spy caper, with Clank going undercover after Ratchet is framed for stealing the Eye of Infinity, a priceless gem, from the Boltaire Museum.

Clank's arsenal reads like a send-up of every spy-movie gadget briefing: the Tie-a-Rang, Cuff Link Bombs, the Tanglevine Carnation, the Blowtorch Briefcase, the Thunderstorm Umbrella and the Holo-Knuckles. Quick-time sequences let him slip past guards, his Clank-Fu moves and weapons can be upgraded, and when subtlety fails he can transform into Giant Clank. Puzzle rooms put the little Gadgebots back to work, with you switching between them to solve each one, and Clank even trades sneaking for a snowboard and other vehicles.

The investigation is only half the story. Ratchet spends the game behind bars, battling fellow inmates in arena-style fights that echo the combat challenges of the earlier games, armed with weapons Clank smuggles to him baked inside cakes. Captain Qwark gets his own action-heavy chapters that parody his self-penned autobiography, and the trail of crooks Clank follows, from Number Woo to Countess Ivana Lottabolts, eventually leads to Klunk, an evil Clank double built by Dr. Nefarious, and a showdown in an underwater base on Hydrano.

Originally a PSP game from High Impact Games, it was brought to the PlayStation 2 by Sanzaru Games in 2009 and became the final Ratchet & Clank release on the console, a fitting send-off for the system where the duo got their start. Critics saw it as a lighter side story than the main games and reviews were mixed, but the gadget gags, the prison-cake running joke and Qwark's tall tales capture the series' sense of humor perfectly. It makes a neat bookend for a PS2 Ratchet & Clank shelf: the last chapter the console ever got.

About the game

Secret Agent Clank is a platform video game developed by High Impact Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. It was released for the PlayStation Portable (PSP) in 2008 and later for the PlayStation 2. The game is a spin-off from the popular Ratchet & Clank series and features Clank as the main character in a secret agent role. In the game, Clank dons his "Secret Agent Clank" persona, which was previously seen in brief TV show segments within the main series. The story revolves around Clank working to clear Ratchet's name after Ratchet is framed for a crime he did not commit. The gameplay diverges from the traditional Ratchet & Clank format, focusing more on stealth and gadget-based play, though it retains the series' trademark humour and style.
