Sea of Stars feels like opening a Super Nintendo cartridge you somehow never knew existed. Sabotage Studio, the team behind The Messenger, set out to make the turn-based RPG they wished the 16-bit era had produced, and the result is a lush, generous adventure that wears its love for Chrono Trigger and its peers openly while fixing nearly every frustration those games carried.
The heroes are Zale and Valere, Children of the Solstice trained since childhood to channel the power of the sun and moon, and they are joined by Garl, a warrior cook whose relentless optimism quietly becomes the soul of the story. Battles look classic but play with real energy. Timed button presses boost your attacks and blunt incoming hits, enemies telegraph powerful spells behind a row of Locks you must break with the right damage types, and Live Mana scattered by your strikes lets you charge up skills or launch combination attacks between party members. There are no random encounters, and every fight is a small tactical puzzle rather than a grind.
Exploration is just as inventive. Zale and Valere can climb, swim, vault gaps and drop from ledges almost anywhere, so dungeons feel like playgrounds instead of corridors. The pixel art is some of the most detailed ever made for the style, with dynamic lighting that makes sunsets, caves and moonlit beaches glow, and side activities like fishing and the tavern strategy game Wheels give you plenty of reasons to linger. The score is by Eric W. Brown, with guest compositions from Chrono Trigger composer Yasunori Mitsuda.
Sea of Stars won Best Independent Game at The Game Awards 2023 and is set in the same universe as The Messenger, rewarding fans of Sabotage's first game with a few satisfying connections. On PlayStation 5 it is a gorgeous, comfortable way to experience a modern classic of the genre, and an easy recommendation to anyone who grew up with Square's golden age of RPGs and has been waiting for that feeling to come back.
