Item Description
Scyther's sleek, mantis-like design and twin blades made it a standout of the first generation, and its holo card made the jump from Jungle to Base Set 2 with its bite intact. Base Set 2 arrived in 2000 as a compilation set, gathering favorites from Base Set and Jungle into a single 130-card expansion, and Scyther came along as one of its holos.
The card plays the same two-step routine that made the original fun. A single Grass Energy pays for Swords Dance, which makes Slash deal 60 damage instead of 30 during your next turn, so this 70 HP Basic Grass Pokémon can threaten a big knockout without needing to evolve. Its Pokédex entry describes a Pokémon moving with such ninja-like speed that it seems to multiply, a neat match for an attacker built around one sudden strike.
This is the Base Set 2 printing, collector number 17/130, illustrated by Ken Sugimori, in holofoil. Sugimori's artwork carries over from the Jungle original, giving collectors a second Wizards of the Coast era holo of the same classic Scyther image.
