Item Description

Swords Dance is a two-turn promise, and Scyther's Jungle card asks you to keep it. Spend a single Grass Energy on Swords Dance, and on your next turn Slash hits for 60 instead of its usual 30, a serious swing for a Basic Pokémon in the early days of the trading card game. The setup turn telegraphs the threat, which is part of the fun: your opponent knows the blow is coming and has one turn to do something about it.

The 70 HP Basic Grass Pokémon also has no Retreat Cost, so it can slip in and out of the Active spot for free, a handy pivot that complements its all-in attack. Its Pokédex entry describes a Pokémon so fast and agile it seems to multiply, a fitting note for the sleek mantis whose bladed arms made it a playground favorite from the first generation.

This is the Jungle printing, collector number 10/64, illustrated by Ken Sugimori, in holofoil. Jungle was the first expansion after Base Set, arriving in 1999, and Sugimori, the designer behind the original Pokémon, gave Scyther a crisp holo portrait that looks right at home in a vintage binder.
